Timber Student Residences: Comfort, Sustainability and Engineering for Higher Education
Student residences with the comfort of timber: CarmoForm strengthens its commitment to sustainable higher education solutions. The growing demand for student housing in Portugal is pushing universities and public institutions to seek faster, more efficient and sustainable construction methods.
Timber construction has emerged as a strategic solution, combining technical performance, comfort and reduced environmental impact.
CarmoForm, the timber engineering division of CarmoWood, is actively involved in landmark student accommodation projects designed to meet real student needs with long-term durability.
University of Coimbra
New timber-structured student residence. CarmoForm is part of the construction team for the new University of Coimbra student residence on Rua Luís de Camões.
This project represents another step in the modernization of university housing, focusing on innovative construction solutions aligned with sustainability goals.
The use of timber structures allows for faster construction timelines, reduces the project’s carbon footprint, and ensures high levels of thermal and acoustic comfort—essential factors in buildings intended for students’ daily living.
More than just a material, wood here takes on a structural and architectural role, contributing to healthier and more durable spaces designed for the intensive use typical of university residences.
Avepark, Guimarães
A timber building for students and researchers.
This is not CarmoForm’s first project in the field of student housing. In Guimarães, the company is involved in the construction of Avepark, a large timber complex developed in partnership with another company in the sector.
Avepark is one of the largest timber buildings in Portugal designed for student and academic accommodation.
The project demonstrates that engineered timber construction meets demanding structural, functional and regulatory requirements at scale.
Why timber is a strategic solution for student housing
CarmoForm’s experience confirms key advantages:
- accelerated construction;
- precision through prefabrication;
- lower embodied carbon;
- superior thermal and acoustic performance;
- proven durability.
These characteristics make wood an increasingly valued choice for universities, municipalities, and developers seeking solutions aligned with sustainability policies and long-term efficiency.
CarmoForm: timber engineering serving the future of education
Through projects such as the University of Coimbra residence and Avepark, CarmoForm reinforces its position as a trusted partner in sustainable student housing construction.
Each project is approached as a commitment to quality, durability, and respect for the context in which it is situated. At CarmoWood, we believe that building for education is building for the future—with solutions that stand the test of time, just like the wood we work with.
